The Innovation & Startup Incubator (ISI) is established as a central, University-wide institutional mechanism to promote innovation, entrepreneurship, and the commercialisation of knowledge across all Faculties, Centres, Institutes, and academic units. The Incubator functions as a bridge between teaching, research, and industry, enabling students and staff to translate ideas and research outputs into viable products, services, and enterprises that contribute to national development priorities and the knowledge economy.

OBJECTIVE

The primary objectives of the Incubator are to promote, facilitate, and undertake activities relating to:

  • Innovation and Entrepreneurship: Fostering an innovation culture and startup development within the University.
  • Commercialisation: Facilitating the commercialisation of research outputs and intellectual property.
  • Collaboration: Promoting interdisciplinary collaboration among Faculties, Institutes, Centres, and Units.
  • Engagement: Strengthening University–Industry–Government engagement and linkages.
  • Sustainable Development: Encouraging sustainable and socially responsible enterprise development to contribute to national socio-economic growth.

TARGET GROUPS & ELIGIBILITY

The Incubator is open to a diverse range of university stakeholders, including:

  • Undergraduate students of all Faculties.
  • Postgraduate students of all Faculties and Institutes.
  • Academic staff and researchers.
  • Multidisciplinary teams comprising any of the above categories.

Eligibility and selection are merit-based, guided by innovation potential, commercial viability, and alignment with university priorities.

SERVICES & OPERATIONS

The ISI supports the entire journey from idea to market through various stages:

  • Incubation Process: Ideation, validation, incubation, acceleration, and graduation.
  • Core Services: Mentorship, technical support, business advisory services, and access to university infrastructure (co-working spaces, maker spaces, and labs).
  • Business Development: Support in prototyping, market validation, investor readiness, and the formation of university spin-offs.
  • IP Management: Coordination of Intellectual Property identification, protection, and patent filing.
