RACE-TO-ZERO INITIATIVE
UoC as a signatory of the UNCCC Race-to-Zero initiative
The ÌÇÐÄÔ´´ is on the verge of becoming a sustainable, green, and carbon-neutral university. The university has plans to become a greener, carbon-neutral university through enhancing greenery, shifting to more renewable energy sources, and minimizing the waste on campus, while promoting recycling and its contribution to a circular economy. The University has planned to achieve this with the support of its Center for Environmental Initiatives (CEI). The CEI made the ÌÇÐÄÔ´´ a polythene-free zone, with the goal of reducing the use of single-use plastics on campus, in 2017. Read More
The ÌÇÐÄÔ´´ has always been concerned about its carbon footprint and action needed to reach carbon neutrality and climate change mitigation. The carbon footprint of the university in 2019 was 4171.1 metric tons CO2-e yr-1 and it was much lower in 2020 (i.e. 1653.93 metric tons CO2-e yr-1), mostly due to lower energy (and resource) consumption, waste generation, and online mode of activities during the COVID-19 period. Signing the race-to-zero initiative will further help speed up the process of reaching carbon neutrality as a university.
